Vernissage is a glimpse into the creative lives of American artists (World War Two veterans) who came to study and work in Paris, the Art Capitol of the world. Filming in 1950, Carmen D'Avino intimately shows us the artists at work in their studio homes, also capturing a mundane, often humorous, daily life style.
Galerie Huit (Gallery Eight), became the showcase for their painting, graphics and sculpture. Growing to a member-ship of nearly sixty, they banded together socially and professionally, to survive. A collaboration with the filmmaker, this restoration from the unedited original film, is an important art history record of the transition to Abstract-expressionism. Enhanced with a classical soundtrack, this moving video pays homage to Carmen D'Avino, Galerie Huit, and a handful of American artists in Paris in 1950...
The following artists are featured... Jonah Kinigstein Sidney Geist, Oscar Chelimsky, Norman Rubington, John Anderson, Shinkichi Tajiri and Herbert Katzman.
